Washington Square Park (Manhattan): The Washington Memorial Arch in the northern edge of the Park at the foot of Fifth Avenue and viewing northward thru same up this thoroughfare. This structure was completed in April of 1892 at a cost of $128,000. Further details will be found in King's Handbook of New York (1892) on page 158. Buildings on the right and left of this structure face southward on the Park and bear Washington Square North numbers; the Rhinelander being the latter. Note the modern apartment house in View 1. This is at the S.E. corner of Fifth Avenue and E. 8th Street and is titled No. 1 Fifth Avenue. Thru the Arch and in the distance appears the monolithic Empire State Building.
