(1) East Houston Street, west from but not including the Bowery, as seen from the Fisher Building (No. 97-103 East Houston Street, between the Bowery and Chrystie Street). Also shown is a general view of the surrounding area. The buildings on the north side of the street, to the depth of 10 feet were razed to make way for the construction of the Independent System Subway (Eighth Ave. subway). The buildings in the foreground, of which only the upper stories are visible are on the west side of the Bowery. July 17, 1929. P. L. Sperr. (2) A portion of the view shown in No. 1 (north side) at a later date, as seen from the Houston Street Station of the Third Ave. Elevated Line, on the Bowery, and showing an exclusive view of Houston Street. Note the clearance between Elizabeth and Mott Streets after the houses which occupied that site were razed. The other buildings were demolished later. September 19, 1929. P. L. Sperr.
