Broadway (tracks thereon) east side, north from 51st Avenue (formerly Maurice Avenue, also known as Cook Avenue) to Corona Avenue (formerly Union Avenue); showing at the corner foreground, the C. Cook residence of 1873 (formcrly 56 Broadway). One Douglas was the owner in 1891. John A. Rapelje's real estate office was located here in 1922. The houses beyond it occupy the site of the old Newtown House an old tire tavern. This site was eventually owned by the lst Reformed Church of Newtown. The Newtown Hotel of later days stood on the opposite side of the street. In views 2,3, and 4 is seen the 1st Dutch Reformed Church of Newtown. The Dutch Church was built on land donated April 2, 1733. The first edifice was erected in 1735 and was 7Ox60 ft. It was demolished on Sept. 4, 1831. Abraham Riker and his brother-in-law P. Rapelje gave the land for a church and burial around to the village of Newtown. The corner stone for the second edifice was laid on Sept. 16, 1831 by Elder Francis Duryea, and the edifice wad[sic] dedicated July 29th, 1832 by the Rev. Schoomaker D.D. The bell used in this church was cast in Araterdam in 1792. The chapel adjoining the church was erected in 1854. 1922 Views 1, 2 and 3 View 4: March 1922 Eugene L. Arcbruster Collection
